The Hermitage is a museum with a lot of attention for Russian art and culture. It was officially opened in 2009 by Queen Beatrix and Russian President Medvedev. In addition to two large exhibition halls, 48 cabinets also belong to the exhibition area. The Hermitage Amsterdam has a large restaurant, with a terrace in the garden, an auditorium, two lecture halls, a church hall, a study center and two museum shops.
For the Hermitage, among others, Pilkington Spacia™ vacuum insulated glazing was used. There was a clear requirement that thermal insulation of the windows had to be improved. The other important aspect was to prevent condensation from forming at temperatures below 7 degrees. The single coated glass would not provide the required U-value and there was only space for a very thin glass in the existing windows. Pilkington Spacia™ proved to be the best solution thanks to the good thermal insulation value in combination with the minimum thickness (6.2 mm) to be installed in the shallow rebates.
