CityLife Residences, Milan, Italy

The Project
The right glass improves comfort in prestigious buildings.

The CityLife Residence is an extremely ambitious project. It is an important redevelopment project, in the heart of the most international city in Italy, with high expectations in terms of numbers of people, design innovation, social and cultural development of the city. The place is very famous: the area of the former Milan Fair.

The Residences designed by Daniel Libeskind, world-famous star architect, fit into this ambitious context. There are five buildings, with a height ranging from four to thirteen floors, designed and built according to the most modern design criteria: intensive use of internal home automation, Class A energy certification, attention in the choice of materials in terms of eco-sustainability and energy savings.

Each residence is different from the others, with sizes ranging from two-room apartments to large apartments and 2-storey penthouses.

Even the services of the common areas follow this philosophy inspired by the most fashionable trends, with large spaces dedicated to the condominium greenery and pedestrian areas.

In addition, security, which is guaranteed through concierge services, centralized anti-theft systems for homes and condominium parts and 24-hour surveillance systems.

Among the features that immediately catch the eye are the large spaces dedicated to verandas and large windows to allow natural light in.

In these residences, therefore, glass plays a very important role. The very effective choice was based on solutions with double glazing 10 - 16 -10 consisting of an outer layer of toughened Pilkington Optifloat™ Clear, an argon gap and an inner pane of laminated glass from the Pilkington Optiphon™ Therm S3 S range.

Pilkington Optiphon™ Therm S3 S is a highly performing product, which combines high performance of acoustic and thermal insulation, i.e. it retains the heat inside the building, consequently reducing heating costs in the winter period and at the same time it substantially reduces noise pollution. It also provides the strength and safety features of laminated glass.

With the adopted configuration, this product provides Ug value of 1.1 W/m²K, an estimated noise reduction of 45 dB (-2; -5), a solar factor FS of 55%. Despite these values, the light transmission remains extremely high, 75%.

One of the critical aspects of the windows concerned their safety. The requirements resulted in an acoustic safety glass. For this reason, glass products have been developed to guarantee classes: P2A (with Pilkington Optiphon™ Therm S3 S 8,8), P4A (with Pilkington Optiphon™ Therm S3 S 9,5) and P5A (with Pilkington Optiphon™ Therm S3 S 10,3).
