Times, Wrocław, Poland

The Project
The Times Office and Service Building in Wrocław, the capital of Lower Silesia, is one of the largest projects in Poland using the Pilkington Planar™ structural glazing system.

The building designed by Krzysztof Skalski from PRO ART design studio is situated in the heart of the city within the Old Town area.

The Times office building was created as a result of the adaptation and expansion of the medieval children's hospital "Holy Sepulcher" on the corner of St. Nicholas and Casimir the Great. The above-ground part of the medieval walls, as well as the newly built reinforced concrete structure, were filled with modern offices and service rooms. The entrance leading to the inner courtyard refers to the historical form of the former hospital building. The entrance points to the modern character of the building and its new part as well as the internal patio. At the same time, it maintains the composition emphasizing the vertical divisions of the façade, partly resulting from the historical divisions of individual tenement houses.

The entrance façade was made of Pilkington Planar™ structural glazing system supported with glass fins. The insulating glass units were made of Pilkington Optifloat™ Green THS body tinted solar control glass and Pilkington K Glass™ THS low-emissivity glass.

The Planar™ l SentryGlas® System was chosen for the roof glazing. The roof insulating glass units were made of solar control glass Pilkington Optifloat™ Green as an outer pane and the laminated glass in the Planar™ l SentryGlas® System technology with Pilkington K Glass™ low-e coating as an inner pane.

The gable roof structure was made of steel, while the cylindrical roof structure is a steel structure with tension elements.

The use of the Planar™ l SentryGlas® System for the roof glazing proved to be the only method capable of transferring snow loads of 4.2 kN/m². The shape of the structure allowed for point fixing of glass with an area of 2.5 m² – with a shape similar to a square – only in the corners, which eliminated the possibility of using traditional PVB laminated glass, characterized by a much lower load capacity and stiffness than laminated glass used in the Planar™ l SentryGlas® System.
