The Project

Rising from the quayside of Midtermolen to the north of Copenhagen, the headquarters of Danish financial services company ALM Brand looks every inch a new build.  In actuality, the building was constructed in 1994, undergoing a recent renovation with Pilkington Planar™ at the heart of the project, used in combination with the most modern of technologies.

ALM Brand has a longstanding commitment to environmental responsibility, and the façade of its headquarters was cutting edge in its day as far as energy management was concerned. A ventilated double skin wall with integrated wind breaks and sun shades provided a best practice sustainable solution of its time. However, with a further 15 years of façade technological development now available, the original 12 mm toughened external skin of the double skin wall has been replaced using a Pilkington Eclipse Advantage™ Blue-Green product. This glass gives a visually impressive contemporary feel to the building façade, whilst also delivering greater benefits in terms of both low-emissivity properties and solar control performance. In other words, the new façade allows the building to harvest incident solar energy, whilst protecting the building’s occupants working behind it from unwanted glare, solar gain or energy loss.

Undoubtedly the most exciting aspect of the renovation works is the transformation from passive energy management to active energy generation. The new façade at ALM Brand proudly boasts the first Pilkington Planar™ panels to incorporate Building Integrated PhotoVoltaics. The 84 point-fixed BIPV panels, which cover just 10 per cent of the new façade, are expected to generate 41.5 kW of electricity, or 5% of the overall building energy needs. The 1500 mm x 3600 mm sized panels are considerably larger than the more standard product and comprise a 4 mm-thick Pilkington Optiwhite™ front cover plate laminated to an 8 mm Pilkington Optifloat™ structural component. The custom emerald green photovoltaic cells were specifically chosen by the ALM Brand team who then challenged the engineering and operations teams at Pilkington to develop the product from concept to full scale product within the programme of the renovation works.

In addition to upgrading the environmental performance, the renovation has updated its mechanical performance by changing the glass type from a point-fixed toughened system to a point-fixed toughened laminate, designed to stay in place within the façade even if all the glass components are broken. To deliver maximum cost saving during the renovation works, the original mullion system and fixing anchor points were re-used. This required the new Pilkington Planar™ panels to be equal in strength, size and weight to those in the original specification. Planar™|SentryGlas® System was more than a match for the original technology, with two 6 mm toughened glass panels laminated together with a 1.52 SentryGlas® interlayer.

An ambitious project of this type wasn’t however challenge-free for any of the teams involved. As Carsten Moller, chief architect at ALM Brand, explained: “This project was a new area for me in terms of technical detail and specification. Working with the NSG Group was therefore a great help, not only because the glazing options they offered were one of the few that met our requirements, but also because the expertise and knowledge of the team ensured this unique project delivered the goals we set out to achieve.”

Sådan som hovedkvarteret for det danske finanshus ALM Brand rejser sig op fra kajen af Midtermolen i  Københavns Nordhavn, ser hver tomme ud som en nybygning. I virkeligheden blev bygningen bygget i 1994, men har undergået en nylig renovering med Pilkington Planar™ i hjertet af projektet, anvendt i kombination med de mest moderne teknologier.

ALM Brand har en mangeårig forpligtelse til at være miljømæssig ansvarlig, og facaden på hovedkvarteret var banebrydende i sin tid så vidt det angik energistyring. En ventileret dobbelt facade med integrerede afskærmning og solreduktion med den bedste bæredygtige praksis løsning for sin tid. Men med yderligere 15 års facade teknologisk udvikling, som nu er tilgængelig, er de oprindelige 12 mm hærdet yderste glas i dobbeltkonstruktionen blevet erstattet ved anvendelse af et Pilkington Eclipse Advantage™ Blue-Green produkt. Dette glas giver en visuelt imponerende moderne føling til bygningens facade, samtidig giver det større fordele i form af egenskaber med både lav emmisivitet og solafskærmning. Med andre ord, den nye facade giver bygningen udbytte af både indfaldende sollys, samtidig beskytter det bygningens brugere der arbejder bag det mod uønsket blænding, overophedning og energitab.

Uden tvivl er det mest spændende aspekt af renoveringsarbejdet en transformationen fra passiv energistyring til aktiv energiproduktion. Den nye facade på ALM Brand kan stolt prale med de første Pilkington Planar™ paneler der har indarbejdede bygnings Integrerede solceller. De 84 point-fixed BIPV paneler, som dækker ca 10 procent af den nye facade, forventes at generere 41,5 kW elektricitet, eller 5% af den samlede bygnings energibehov. De 1500 mm x 3600 mm store paneler er betydeligt større end standardprodukter og er opbygget med et 4 mm tykt jernfattigt Pilkington Optiwhite™ frontglas lamineret til et 8 mm Pilkington Optifloat™ basisglas. De brugerdefinerede smaragdgrønne solceller blev specifikt valgt af ALM Brands team, der derefter udfordrede ingeniører og projekterende hos Pilkington til at udvikle produktet fra idé til et fuldt skala produkt  inden programmet for renoveringsarbejdet.

Udover at indeklima og miljøresultaterne er opgraderet, har renoveringen også fået opdateret sin mekaniske ydeevne ved at ændre glastype fra et punkt-fikseret hærdet system til et lamineret med to hærdede glas, designet til at forblive på plads i facaden selvom alle glas lag er gået i stykker. Ombygningen gav også maksimal besparelse under renoveringsarbejdet, ved at det oprindelige mullion bæresystem og fastgørelsen til ankerpunkter blev genanvendt. Dette krævede at de nye Pilkington Planar™ glas skulle have samme styrke, størrelse og vægt som dem i den oprindelige specifikation. Planar™|SentryGlas® System passede helt til den oprindelige teknologi, med to 6 mm hærdede glas lamineret sammen med en 1,52 SentryGlas® mellemlagsfolie.

Et ambitiøst projekt af denne type var dog ikke fri for nogen udfordring for de involverede hold. Som Carsten Møller, chefarkitekt hos ALM Brand, forklarede: "Dette projekt var et nyt område for mig i form af tekniske detaljer og specifikationer. Arbejde med NSG Group var derfor en stor hjælp, ikke kun fordi de glas muligheder, de tilbyder var et af de få, der opfyldte vores krav, men også fordi den ekspertise og viden som holdet gav sikrede dette unikke projekt at få leveret de mål, vi satte os for at opnå."
