Polish Airlines Aviation Hall, Warsaw, Poland

The Project
A specific universe connected to aviation

The Hall of Memory, located within the new headquarters of LOT, the Polish national airline, provides a further demonstration of what can be achieved with the Pilkington Profilit™ system. The building as a whole generates an unreal atmosphere.

Using the very latest technologies, the architects Kuryłowicz and Associates have attempted to restore a specific universe connected to aviation, which enabled man to make his ancestral dream – of flying – come true. Thus, the structure of the building fades into the natural environment, the clouds and greenery, thanks to the choice of the materials used, glass and polished stone.

The architects have also taken the interior of the building into account, building a large atrium circumscribing a broad suspended area. The client wished to create a space that could be used, in the future, as an exhibition area, to display LOT’s one hundred years of history. A perpendicular hall was designed with two parallel façades and a roof made of Pilkington Profilit™. The panels were mounted as double glazing: the inner surface consists of Pilkington Profilit™ K25 with wire inlay, the outer surface of neutral Pilkington Profilit™ K25.

The objective was to create a facility, the Hall of Memory, in which visitors could fully appreciate the exhibition without being disturbed by the activity going on around them. The semi-opaque screens thus afford enough light inside the Hall while leaving the activity going on around the hall visible. In parallel, the view from outside the Hall allows the hidden forms within the building to be glimpsed.

Through its perfect proportions and the subtle combination of glass and wood, the Hall of Memory, perfectly integrated into the larger structure, is unmistakably the characteristic feature of the whole construction.
