Pyramide Berger, Traboch, Austria

The Project
The first glance does not deceive: a pyramid in the middle of Austria! Robert Berger, the master carpenter, designed the building for his company "Holzbau Berger" in a form of pyramid. The structure is made of wood and glass.

A pyramid as a house is rather unusual. Even more if the outer walls are made entirely of glass. Anyone who thinks about the high cleaning effort or the cold interiors is basically completely correct unless innovative glass solutions have been specified.

The idea of a glass pyramid as living and working space came from a timber construction company in Traboch, Austria. The choice of the house is not only architecturally striking, it is also very practical: the usable area of 1,400 square meters inside is relatively large in relation to the outside area.

The building therefore only needs a little energy for heating. In addition, the sloping walls mean that no snow remains on the roof that could create a high load on the foundation.

Innovative glass makes it possible

The highlight, however, is the large-scale roof glazing, which consists of 601 m² of triple glazed insulating glass units Pilkington Insulight Activ™.
Triple glazed self-cleaning insulating glass units made of Pilkington Activ™ Clear, Pilkington Optitherm™ S3 T and Pilkington Optilam™ HN have been chosen to provide comfortable interior which serves as a new work and storage facility for the company and a studio and living space.

A lot of light falls into the building through the large glass surface, but the cleaning effort is limited thanks to the self-cleaning properties of the glass. The triple glazing also ensures adequate thermal insulation, which only allows minimal energy to escape and safety thanks to laminated glass used as inner pane.
