German Football Museum, Dortmund, Germany

The Project
German Football Museum in Dortmund features 1,600 exhibits worthy of protection that tell their own story and allow many visitors to indulge in nostalgic memories.

Particular attention is paid to the numerous trophies on display in the football museum. The trophies usually have a high-gloss surface and are therefore a challenge when it comes to the right lighting and choice of glass display case. Two of these trophies, the UEFA Champions League Cup and the DFB Cup, have recently been put on display in new display cases made especially for them.

The glass display cases are made of Pilkington OptiView™ Ultra Protect. It is a laminated safety glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides. The Pilkington OptiView™ coating can even achieve an external reflection of less than one percent. The transparent coating is applied to Pilkington Optiwhite™, an extra clear glass made from low-iron oxide raw materials. Extra clear glass has an advantage, especially with thicker substrates and laminates, as the colour rendering remains almost undistorted.

Visitors can view the two trophies from all sides without distracting reflections disturbing their view.

Malte von Pidoll, curator at the German Football Museum, is enthusiastic: "The new display cases are an enrichment for our exhibition. The difference to conventional display case glass is clearly visible. I am convinced that the anti-reflective glass is also an added value for the visitors of the football museum, because viewing and photographing is now possible without disturbing reflections."
