Wöhrl, Nürnberg, Germany

The Project
With the renovation of the fashion department store Wöhrl and the construction of a new building, a modern and spacious shopping oasis has emerged on Nuremberg's Ludwigsplatz. With a total area of almost 30,000 square meters, the shopping center offers something for the whole family.

The main tenant Wöhrl and partner companies invested almost 40 million euros in the flagship retail project, the majority of which was taken over by the builder TETRIS Grundbesitz AG, based in Reichenschwand. Together with Nürnberger Goetz-Neun Ingenieure GmbH, a barrier-free department store was built on more than six floors in the original building and on five floors in the new building, which can be reached directly from both the underground and by car.

The Düsseldorf architects Schwitzke & Partner are responsible for the interior fittings in the old and new building. It was renovated for three years during ongoing operations, creating rooms inspired by the Franconian environment that invite you to linger.

For the façade design of the new building, which stands between the two renovated main buildings, the architects Hübsch + Harlé Stadtplaner from Fürth used Franconian shell limestone, which integrates harmoniously into the surroundings. The special feature of the large shop windows, which are clearly and symmetrically structured and extend over two floors, is the use of anti-reflective and thermal insulation glass Pilkington OptiView™ Ultra Therm. Due to the anti-reflective coating, the glass front appears almost invisible, so that the viewer has a clear view of the interior of the building and the sales areas even from a distance. The low emissivity coating also increases the energy efficiency of the building. A total of around 200 square meters of Pilkington OptiView™ Ultra Therm glass was installed in the shop windows.

The new Nürnberg department store is a project close to the heart of the Wöhrl family and is intended not only to make the city center more attractive, but also to strengthen the Nürnberg metropolitan region.
