Lookout Tower, Dukla, Slovakia

The Project
On the Dukla Pass, on the Polish-Slovakian border, there is an observation tower from which one can admire the panorama of the Polish and Slovakian battlefields during the Dukla-Prešov Operation. The tower was opened to the public in 1974 on the 30th anniversary of the Battle of the Dukla Pass. It is 49 m high and was erected on the site of the original wooden lookout tower from 1959, near the temporary observation post of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps. The interior features sculptures by Slovak artists as well as the Red Army's Plan of Attack through the Carpathian Mountains to directly assist the Slovak National Uprising and a situational map of the Dukla Pass from 30.09-5.11.1944.

In 2021, a general renovation of the tower began, divided into two stages. The reconstruction work mainly involved the comprehensive restoration and modernisation of both domes of the tower and construction work on the entire site. These were to increase the attractiveness of the site and provide a comfortable environment for visitors and tourists.

Pilkington Insulight AviSafe™ Triple insulated glass units were installed in the upper dome of the tower to minimise bird collisions with the windows. These were made of Pilkington AviSafe™ T toughened bird-safe coated glass as the outer pane. The special patterned coating enhances UV reflection, disrupts light reflections, and makes the glass surface more visible to birds while maintaining high transparency and an attractive exterior appearance.
