BIG's new headquarters on a narrow quay in Copenhagen's harbour area really stands out. The 4 880 m², seven-storey building has been certified for DGNB Gold, which is achieved in part by using a new type of concrete with a 25% lower carbon footprint. There are also solar and geothermal energy systems, and natural ventilation of the office spaces.
Everything from door handles to concrete beams, from glass façades to the outdoor environment has been designed by BIG's team and is the first example of fully integrated LEAP design – a collaboration between landscape, engineering, architecture and product designers.
Each floor has direct access to a balcony connected to the floor below and above, forming a 140-metre-long zigzag path from the roof to the dock. This provides an additional fire escape, freeing up space inside the building.
At the far end of the quay, a former car park has been converted into a public park and promenade with dunes, rocks, trees and plants that thrive in the typical coastal climate. In the southern part, plants, rocks and trees support biodiversity.
Glaseksperten A/S has supplied around 1,400 m² of triple glazing of varying specifications with 6 and 8 mm Pilkington Suncool™ 70/40 to the project. This product provides high light transmission, good thermal insulation and effective solar control.
