Located on a shopping street in the centre of Trondheim, Nordre Gate 12 is a retail and office building that, after renovation, will have a restaurant with panoramic views of the city and a roof terrace open to the public. The building will be certified BREEAM Outstanding once the refurbishment is complete. Occupancy will take place in the first half of 2025.
The roof terrace has glass balustrades made of Pilkington Activ™ Clear self-cleaning glass, processed into toughened laminated safety glass by Glaseksperten A/S.
The composition of the glass is following:
10 mm toughened Pilkington Activ™ Clear / 1.52 mm clear film / 10 mm toughened clear float
The terrace offers an expansive view of both the city and the water, and the transparent safety glass railings make the terrace feel accessible and open.
Pilkington Activ™ Clear self-cleaning glass has a coating of titanium dioxide with photo-catalytic and hydrophilic properties and works in two stages. The coating reacts with natural daylight to break down and loosen organic dirt. When it rains, instead of forming droplets, the water spreads evenly over the surface of the glass, forming a thin film and helping to wash away any dirt and reduce streaks.
In addition, the self-cleaning glass coating breaks down harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless and easily soluble nitrates that are washed away when it rains. Thus, titanium dioxide coatings on buildings contribute to air purification.
