Holmenkollen's newly renovated metro station was ready for the opening of the World Ski Championships in February 2011.
The entire area has undergone significant restructuring. The main focus of the project was to increase the capacity and improve the function of the station. The challenge was to retain the old station building while increasing capacity and accessibility. This was solved by building a new station section underneath the old one.
The new part of the station, designed by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, has been given a modern look by installing Pilkington glass in a silicone-bonded structural glazing system from Skandinaviska Glassystem. The glass is freely clamped at the top and bottom without vertical profiles. Fully glazed corners with stepped glass edges have made the building highly transparent, revealing the unique view of the Oslo Fjord.
The glass sections consist of triple-glazed insulating glass units with Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning glass as the outer pane and Pilkington Optitherm™ S3 as the inner pane. Such a glass combination helped achieve a low Ug -value and good indoor climate. In addition, self-cleaning glass reduces the need for glass cleaning.
