Institute of Food Technology and Gastronomy, University of Łomża, Poland

The Project

Since autumn 2012, students at the University of Łomża have been studying at the state-of-the-art Institute of Food Technology and Gastronomy in Łomża. The building is divided into four sections and stands out not only for its excellent teaching facilities and state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories, but also for its unique aesthetics. The building's distinctive façade combines pastel-coloured glass elements with dark aluminium and raw concrete.

To achieve the desired colour effect in the glass façades, insulating glass units were used that were laminated with coloured film (Pilkington Optilam™ I Green 8.8 and Pilkington Optilam™ I Yellow 8.8), as well as decorative opaque elements in the form of enamelled insulating glass units (Pilkington Pilkington Spandrel Glass IGU). These were colour-matched to the transparent parts using Pilkington Optifloat™ Clear THS toughened glass, which was coated with yellow (RAL 1016), green (RAL 6018) and light grey (RAL 9018) enamel on the inside.

To ensure high levels of sun protection, thermal insulation and safety, Pilkington Insulight™ Sun insulating glass units were used for over 1,000 square metres of glazing in the building. The outer pane is Pilkington Suncool™ 70/40 THS (subjected to heat soak testing), and the inner pane is Pilkington Optilam™ Clear 8.8 laminated glass.

Due to fire safety requirements, Pilkington Pyrostop® fire-resistant laminated glass was also used in one of the building's façades to ensure tightness and fire insulation.
