The nhow Amsterdam RAI Hotel, opened in January 2020, is a striking addition to the Amsterdam skyline and a new architectural landmark for the city. Reaching 91 metres in height and offering 650 guest rooms, it stands as the largest hotel in the Benelux region.
Designed by the renowned Dutch architecture firm OMA, the 24 storey tower is instantly recognisable for its bold composition: three geometric, triangular sections placed one above the other, each rotated to offer a unique perspective on the surroundings. This distinctive layout gives the building its dynamic appearance while creating rooms with impressive panoramic views across Amsterdam.
Situated next to the RAI Convention Centre, the building’s sculptural form echoes the traditional advertising column once found nearby, reinterpreted in a contemporary architectural expression. Each of the three stacked volumes is oriented toward a key viewpoint – the historic city centre to the north, Schiphol Airport to the southwest, and Amsterdam’s newer districts to the southeast – ensuring that guests enjoy varied and far reaching vistas.
The hotel rises from a two storey circular base that houses retail units at street level and the hotel’s lounge and bar above. At the top of the tower, several floors are dedicated to meeting and event facilities, including a broadcasting studio used for daily media production.
The nhow Amsterdam RAI Hotel stands out not only for its ambitious architecture but also for its highly visible glass façade. The glazing incorporates Pilkington Insulight™ Sun units made of Pilkington Suncool™ 50/25 high-performance solar control glass, among other Pilkington products (screen printed enamelled glass, curved IGUs) supplied by Pilkington Nederland.
These advanced solar control solutions combine generous daylight transmission with excellent protection from solar heat gain, contributing to both comfort and energy efficiency. The building’s sustainable design is further underscored by its BREEAM NL certification.
