Basecamp Lyngby, Kongens Lyngby, Denmark

The Project
Located approximately 10 km north of Copenhagen, the spectacular Basecamp Lyngby, designed by Lars Gitz Architects, integrates high-quality architecture and design with the landscape, promoting social sustainability.

Inspired by the surrounding nature, the building’s sinuous, organic form is evident throughout, and the grass- and flower-covered roof, six storeys above ground level, offers views of Lake Lyngby.

The building houses a residential complex centred on community and sustainability, catering for both senior citizens and students. Sharing communal rooms, laundry facilities and kitchens reduces energy consumption and resource use. Basecamp Lyngby is an exciting example of what can be achieved by combining social and environmental aspects. There are just over 600 student flats, around 50 senior flats and guest flats in total, in addition to communal areas.

The project’s vision was to provide residents with a high level of comfort whilst allowing in plenty of natural light. The glazed façade comprises around 4,000 insulated glazing units featuring Pilkington Suncool™ 70/40 high performance solar control glass, which were manufactured by Glaseksperten A/S. These units reduce solar heat gain whilst still allowing plenty of light in. The glass façade reinforces the connection to the surrounding nature and contributes to the building’s open and modern appearance.

In 2020, the project won the Iconic Award for innovative architecture and the best concept for fostering community across different age groups, as well as the Building of the Year award in the residential category.

Basecamp Lyngby is DGNB Gold certified and won the Green Cities Europe Award in 2023.
