Igloos in Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland

The Project
The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is a beautiful hotel high above the Arctic Circle in Lapland, Finland. It is famous for its Glass Igloos that make it one of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide. They provide guests with amazing views of the night sky to watch Northern Lights and the Arctic sky directly from their beds.

Thanks to electrically heated insulating glass units made by Finnglass even when the temperature falls far below zero (even to -50°C) the glass remains transparent and the interior is still comfortable. The unit is heated on both sides and the upper pane melts ice and snow from the glass igloo external surface. Specially designed insulating glass units incorporating Pilkington K Glass™, low emissivity glass with electrically conductive coating, were produced to meet the design and functional challenge.

The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort was established in 1973 by Jussi Eiramo and the first Glass Igloos in the world were built in 1999. Since then the resort has grown and become the most well-known Finnish travel destination.
